Current Activity Groups

(listed alphabetically)

Garden Club

MEETING DAY: We meet the 1st Tuesday of the month, October through June.  No meeting in January.

MEETING TIME: 11:00 – 1:00 pm

MEETING PLACE: The location varies, depending on the topic.

PROGRAM: We offer visits to local gardens and nurseries and we have occasional speakers. Members are asked to adopt a month, which involves planning the program, composing an email to announce the location, and sending a thank you when appropriate. Our primary communication is by email. Members receive an email with directions about two weeks before each meeting. Additional emails may be sent to inform about community activities related to gardening or to share articles of interest.

DUES: The Garden Club dues are $6. Funds are used for incidental expenses and to help support the Newcomers Christmas Project.

Kitchen Kutups

MEETING DAY: 3rd Thursday of the month September through May

Each member picks a month and chooses the recipes.  Stations are set up with printed recipes, ingredients, and utensils needed.  Generally, 2 cooks work together to create the dishes, and coordination is required so the meal is ready to be served around noontime.  As we feast on the meal, we discuss any changes in the recipes we made.  Members help keep the dishes and utensils clean as we go along and make sure the kitchen is back in order before we leave with copies of the recipes, full tummies, and happy hearts.  Sometimes instead of cooking in a home we will go on a field trip for lunch and shopping or eat out locally.

Mexican Train Group – Fun Dominoes Game

MEETING DAY: 4th Friday of the month, no meeting in November & December

MEETING TIME: 1:00 – 3:00/3:30 PM

MEETING PLACE: Members take turns volunteering to host at their homes.  Generally, there are two tables of four players each.

The hosting member sends an email reminder prior to each meeting and provides beverages and a sweet treat for the group. If unable to attend a meeting, members are responsible for finding a substitute player from the roster to play in their place.

Mexican Train is a fun dominoes game played with a little strategy and a lot of luck, allowing for plenty of time during the round for chatting and enjoying each other’s company.  No previous experience necessary—the game is easy to learn. The object of the game is to play all your dominoes, or at least as many high-point dominoes as possible during each round. Players take turns building lines of end-matching dominoes that run around the table.  Winner of the round is the player who plays all their dominoes first; winner of the game is the player with the lowest score overall.

Monday Morning Walkers

MEETING DAY: Monday mornings, except holidays

MEETING TIME: 8:30 a.m. to about 9:15 a.m.

MEETING PLACE: Nevada County Fairgrounds, Parking Lot 1, fairgrounds entrance gate (look for Gigi, the cute dog in our group)

Start your week off right by stepping out with the Monday Morning Walkers! We meet weekly to walk and talk our way around the fairgrounds, usually three laps. While we like to keep moving, we’re not above stopping to pet a sweet dog and chat with its owner along the way.

The paths we follow are paved and fairly flat, so the walk is not difficult—just fun!

Monthly Movie Group

MEETING DAY:  3rd Tuesday of the month

This group gets together for a movie early afternoons on the 2nd Monday of a month. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact the Activities Director.

The plan is to go to a movie around noon.  About a week ahead, members receive an email with a list of 3 movies for the members to choose from.  The movie receiving the most votes received by reply email will be the movie we will attend.

After the movie, members may choose to go someplace nearby for coffee and a nosh, and to talk about the movie and any movies coming up that members may wish to see.

This is a fairly new group with a new leader, so we will be making adjustments based on your feedback so please let us know what you think.

Beginners are welcome, and we’ll be happy to provide instruction and support.

Writing Group

The new Writing Group has gotten off to a good start, but would love to have a few more members. The group generally meets twice a month on Wednesday afternoons (sometimes Fridays) at 1 pm to share their writing, get suggestions for improvement, or tips on classes or articles of interest. They are somewhat flexible with meeting times, as they are new and want to accommodate all members. If you’re interested in joining the group, please contact the Activities Chair.

Yarn Art

GROUP GOAL: Create scarves for Newcomers Christmas Families. Number of scarves created per person is discussed & determined by February each year.  Quota is due in October each year. INDIVIDUAL GOALS: Work on individual projects of your choice.  Patterns are shared.  Yarn donations welcome for general use.  Help with individual projects if needed.  Socializing & sharing general information

NOTE: The following groups are currently full; some groups accept substitutes.

We have 8 permanent members. We had a lot of trouble trying to get up to 12 members, so we decided to just keep our group at 8 members only. We do have subs now and then.

When we have less than 7 members, and can’t find a sub, we usually just play other games.  We leave the games up to the member for that month. Also, the other 4 months out of the year, we will try and go out to lunch or see a movie. We also have a couple’s Bunco at least once a year. We then have dinner instead of lunch.

Gourmet Girls

We meet once a month, approximately 8 months out of the year, on the 1st Friday of the month.  One person hosts the meeting and their responsibilities are to plan the meal, shop for the meal, and set up cooking stations for each recipe. We decide at the beginning of the year who will be hosting for which month. We usually have a 3 to 4 course meal – a main, a side or two and a dessert. Once the meal has been prepared, we all sit down to enjoy it.  We meet at 10:30 in the morning and are usually done by no later than 2 p.m.  We also schedule two extra “social” evenings to include our husbands and that usually happens in July and December.

Happy Cookers

MEETING DAY: 3rd Monday of the month

We cook together with food and recipes provided by the hostess. then we eat our lunch of the food prepared. We usually get done by 2:30 or 3 PM.  The ladies sign up for a date each year, and with only 8 members this means we skip a few months, but sometimes meet for lunch to plan as needed.  We have a Christmas meeting in December with spouses invited and a gift exchange., and often also have a summer barbecue with spouses. These last 2 are usually in the evening.  These evening meetings are often something of a potluck, with food items brought already prepared by each member as recommended by the hostess to go with the main course which she provides.  We are currently full with 8 members, and the group does not wish to use substitutes.

Wednesday Hand & Foot

MEETING DAY: 2nd Wednesday of the month

Meeting time: 1:00 – 3:00 pm

The Game: Hand & Foot is a card game – a version of Canasta. It’s very easy to learn. Really, it is!  There is a lot of laughing at our games. Even though we’re only together for a couple of hours, it’s a time for hugs and catching up on each other’s lives.  We meet in members’ homes, rotating the Hostess Duty. The hostess sets two tables and offers snacks and drinks. Members receive a reminder email and directions about a week before each meeting.

Availability: Currently we have no openings, but we need subs almost every month. If you’re interested, call Nina and get on our sub list.
