BOOK CLUBS

Page Turners

Page Turners is a fun group of women who enjoy reading good books and talking about what they’ve read. Book discussions often flow into discussion of our personal lives and thought processes, promoting further bonding within our group. We do not limit ourselves to a specific  genre; rather we embrace many types and read a wide variety—historical and current fiction, suspense, mystery, humor, as well as some non-fiction works. Most of our selections are readily available at the library.

We use the democratic process to select our books for the year, with each member nominating up to two books. If there are more nominations than months of reading, we vote to choose the titles we will read. If the number of reading months is equal to or greater than the number of books nominated, we accept the nominations and assign them to specific months for reading.

COOKING CLUBS

Happy Cookers

MEETING DAY: 3rd Monday of the month

We cook together once a month, (usually 8 months) with food and recipes provided by the hostess.  We meet at the hostesss home at 10:00, review and divvy up the recipe and go to work.  The best is enjoying the fruits of our labor and  having a great time.  We usually wrap by 2:30 p.m.  The balance of the months we meet somewhere for lunch.  We have 2 social meetings which include our spouses, usually in December for a holiday celebration and a summer barbecue.

Kitchen Kutups

MEETING DAY: 3rd Thursday of the month September through May

Each member picks a month and chooses the recipes.  Stations are set up with printed recipes, ingredients, and utensils needed.  Generally, 2 cooks work together to create the dishes, and coordination is required so the meal is ready to be served around noontime.  As we feast on the meal, we discuss any changes in the recipes we made.  Members help keep the dishes and utensils clean as we go along and make sure the kitchen is back in order before we leave with copies of the recipes, full tummies, and happy hearts.  Sometimes instead of cooking in a home we will go on a field trip for lunch and shopping or eat out locally.

GARDEN CLUB

MEETING DAY: We meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month, October through June.  No meeting in January.

MEETING TIME: 11:00 – 1:00 pm

MEETING PLACE: The location varies, depending on the topic.

PROGRAM: We offer visits to local gardens and nurseries and we have occasional speakers. Members are asked to adopt a month, which involves planning the program, composing an email to announce the location, and sending a thank you when appropriate. Our primary communication is by email. Members receive an email with directions about two weeks before each meeting. Additional emails may be sent to inform about community activities related to gardening or to share articles of interest.

DUES: The Garden Club dues are $6. Funds are used for incidental expenses and to help support the Newcomers Christmas Families Program

WRITING GROUP

The Writing Group consists of members with diverse interests and writing projects, from poetry to memoirs to nonfiction.  They meet once a month to share what they have written and get feedback from fellow members or offer tips on classes or activities of interest.  The group meets at 1:00 p.m. once a month with dates determined in advance by the members.  New members are welcome.

Mysteries and More Book Club

MEETING DAY: 1st Monday of the Month

MEETING TIME: 1:30– 3:00 pm

MEETING PLACE: Members volunteer to host meetings at their homes.

An email reminder is sent prior to each meeting.  The volunteer host provides drinks & a snack or sweets. The Group’s goal is to expand knowledge while reading and discussing a variety of books and authors. Members share suggestions for books to read and celebrate monthly birthdays at each meeting. We sometimes combine meeting with lunch at a local restaurant. We always socialize and enjoy each others company!

Gourmet Girls Cooking Club

We meet once a month, approximately 8 months out of the year, on the 1st Friday of the month.  One person hosts the meeting and their responsibilities are to plan the meal, shop for the meal, and set up cooking stations for each recipe. We decide at the beginning of the year who will be hosting for which month. We usually have a 3 to 4 course meal – a main, a side or two, and a dessert. Once the meal has been prepared, we all sit down to enjoy it.  We meet at 10:30 in the morning and are usually done by no later than 2 p.m.  We also schedule two extra “social” evenings to include our husbands and that usually happens in July and December.
